NetApp Reinforces Their Storage Management

Storage management has become a huge issue for datacenters and IT in general. The abundance of inexpensive storage plus the ease of deployment of storage virtualization and the tools and utilities for delivering virtual storage pools and allowing the user to more carefully spend their storage dollars has led to a market that thrives on both the downward trend in the price per gigabyte of storage and an increasing desire to virtualize storage and limit the need to manage physical devices.

NetApp’s acquisition of Akorri networks will let them add Akorri’s tools for capacity management and planning to their existing portfolio. Akorri’s tools are focused on managing storage with an eye to the entire IT infrastructure, not just the storage devices. As data storage moves from the relatively sinple SAN storage model, to virtualized storage, to innumerable combinations of storage locations that include the cloud, keeping track of all of this data and being able to manage storage wherever it actually resides or independent of how it is delivered, will become a crucial piece of functionality in storage management tools as the industry grows.
